The other day, having finished auditioning for an upcoming series, I layered back up and made my way to the elevator, where another candidate was (still) waiting. It wasn't too long before it showed up, and we got on and proceeded to descend to the Lobby. On the way down, four more people got on board and the most peculiar event occurred: SILENCE. An elevator of six people - two pair of those people having shared common experiences, be it an audition or a work shift - and nobody said a word. I noticed, too, that everyone (but me) was on his/her cell phone; texting, browsing, playing. Needless to say, I was astonished.
I may come across as an old man for saying what I am about to say, but I am going to say it: I remember a time when people on the elevator at least had books, newspapers or even casual elevator-friendly chit-chat, while waiting to land on their floor. Where have those moments gone? It absolutely amazes me that while technology has pushed us so far forward, it has also severely crippled our natural, social capabilities. Perhaps I am making an enormity out of something so minuscule, but I could not help but stand there and gawk like a spectator watching a street fight. And as much as I wanted to say something, clever or otherwise, I was literally amazed to the point of speechlessness. One elevator with a handful of folks, only half an arm-s length away, physically, but eons away, socially.
That moment made me wonder about our patterns of communication and connectivity among one another. We can reach out and converse with people on the other side of the world, yes; but what of the ties we have right here at home? Countless times, I have witnessed friends and family at the dinner table one-foot-in-one-foot-out of the "conversation" checking their phones what have you. Now, I will admit that I am sometimes guilty of this same distraction - no one is exempt - and it drives me mad when I catch myself, just the same. I find myself taking sabbaticals away from social media, or keeping my phone on silent, throughout the day, just to avoid the temptation of jumping to a tone. Crazy, right? Am I the only one...? I doubt it. Of course, it isn't a problem so long as the essence of human-to-human communications on a organic level has not been lost. I dare not use this as a platform to point fingers or judge; I am simply sharing my thought process, while witnessing a moment in time. Now if you'll excuse me, I do believe an email buzzed in just now. Until soon...

IT'S always easy to feel inspiration or hear that whispering voice of assurance when everything is going the way we planned, yes? We carry the light of the Sun and share it with anyone along our path, spreading encouragement and empowerment, giving testimonial declarations of the power of faith and diligence, everywhere we go. Now, that light is always there, even when we are faced with life's obstacles; but we easily forget that, in the face of adversity. We must on some level know this, because where does all that light and inspiration really go, otherwise? Somebody tell me...
CONSIDER that adversity is merely a worthy challenge to prove the strength of your faith and assurance in that which is promised to help you rise. We were not created to sink, We were, however, given the discernment of will, which means that we have the ability to choose what we give time and power to, yes? That being the case, it is a matter of reminding ourselves - daily even - that "nothing works against me, if I don't work against it." Equal and opposite force; it's physics, isn't that inSANE?!? Of course undesirable things occur - to EVERYONE at some point, nobody is exempt - but it really is how you respond to and power through it, knowing that on the other side is that sunlight that you are more than deserving of. Just get out of your own way; and rise evermore.

The hesitation to speak
for fear of being silenced.
The reluctance to do
for fear of being blocked.
The inability to emote
for fear of being numbed.
So just keep it in the mind
Hold in every word, every action
Hold every bit of it hostage
Imprison the freest part of you so you don't
become a "statistic"
The do-right, fist-pumping politic
The speech-giving altruistic
The Fallen Leader
The rising Martyr
No, contain yourself and remain neutral
Let "them" blame the "they"
who took away "our" dignity.
Cause you have all you need, yes?
So why create any (more) enemies, yes?
Stay in your home
Turn up your TV
Tune out the world
Let it all dissolve on its own
Put your efforts on the shelf
All the while, war within yourself
About yourself, no?
Convince yourself that the battle isn't yours
Remind yourself of what happened to those
who spoke up
Yes, remember them so you can
Protect yourself from demise, yes?
Ignore the war in disguise
The war in your mind
that cries out and screams
That fights to be FREE.
Rest peacefully in your bed
As fear marinates in your head
But remember this:
You don't even have to step pass your door
If they really want you dead
